Desperation by RedHeadLilith Desperation by RedHeadLilith
This Mixed Media Photo Manipulation Is Based on The Card 5 Cups In the Rider Tarot Deck .

That card shows a solitary figure facing away from us somewhat towards the left. He (she?) has three overturned cups that he's facing, focused on the emptiness and loss. Behind him nearby are two more cups, upright and still full - but he doesn't see them because he's so fixed on the loss and disappointment.

I have always seen this card as indicating a sense of *unnecessary* loss or desperation, allowing what's gone wrong to cause a person to miss those things that could still go right. To me it is a desperation that is not beyond the power of the person suffering it to overcome; not a victim of fate, but of his/her own unwillingness to look beyond the loss.
Card shows that as a result of the doubt that permeated the previous card alone we are desperate, pessimistic, and see only the half empty glass of the situation. Our responses are proportionate and based on false assumptions that we tested.

Despair makes us enter into ourselves and we begin to develop depression and lack of interest. If we continue to behave this way, the environment will begin to respond accordingly and ultimately we may find ourselves facing a reality where we have reason to really be desperate.

It is important to remember and understand that our desperation is not justified. We must stop the destructive chain into which we found ourselves by a good and proper communication with the environment .

Your English is fine. It's certainly better than my Hebrew. Or my Arabic, if that's your native language. Most people in my country (USA) act as though they'd turn into a foreigner if they tried to learn another language.

If you find something I did useful, go ahead and use it with my blessings. ;-)

You know, one of the ideas I had for photomanipulation was to design and make a deck of Tarot cards. I wonder whether I'd be able to make 78 interesting images, all related... a nice challenge.

But first, I have to figure out how to use GIMP. It's not easy, this work, to drag a hippo from the swamp. :-?

Or a :llama:, either.

Please forgive all the emoticons. I'm just a kid with a new toy - I have to play.

Be well.

לילה טוב

I was wondering if you are from Israel actually ... because of your name :) but since you didn't talk to me in Hebrew and your English is so good I assumed you probably from somewhere else .

About the Tarot cards I has the same idea as you :) if you look for a great group and more ideas take a look here [link] I love this group so much :)

I was born in Chicago to a non-religious family. My name was Gentile-sounding (first name was Bruce), and I looked non-Jewish. People assumed I was a Gentile and felt free to make anti-Semitic remarks to me, thinking I was "one of them."

In 1971 I spent six months on a kibbutz ulpan learning Hebrew (Kibbutz Gat). There I was known as Baruch. I liked the name. When my parents died I had my name legally changed to Baruch Ben-David. No one who knows my name ever thinks I'm a Gentile.

I can still speak a little Hebrew. It's a real pain for me to use those on-screen keyboards to type out the letters, though. I don't speak well enough to make it worthwhile, so I usually don't bother.

אבל אני יכול לקרוא ולכתוב קצת אם אני רוצה. .. אני שחכתי הרבה. לא ידעה אם זוכר דקדוק. לא חשוב עכשיו - רק אם אני בוא לישראל לגור.

Wow, I'm impressed. The only word that gave me trouble was "עכשיו" which is spelled kind of funny. Of course, I have no idea whether this says what I intended it to - so I'll translate into English for you.

"But I can read and write a little if I want... I forgot a lot. I don't know if I remember grammar. It's not important now - only if I come to Israel to live."

If my translation doesn't match the Hebrew, then obviously I really don't know what I'm talking about. Wouldn't be the first time.

Ah, it's 6 AM now, time to get up. I didn't actually sleep last night, because I was playing around with dA and the GIMP and Google and whatever. My cats. Good thing I don't have any serious plans, or I'd be too tired. So I'll say bokker tov and wish you a lailah tov (I forgot what the time difference is, but it's got to be evening or night there, right). OK, erev tov, just to be sure.

Shalom.

OH! Yes, thanks for that link to the group. I'll check it out. I guess *one* *more* *site* isn't going to make a big difference. I say that all the time. ;-)

but my Hebrew grammar is also not so good lol was the subject in school I struggled with - it's not an easy language
I have German friend here she lives here 4 years and still talk only English to everyone ,
anyhow -- I sleep something like 4 hours a night .
btw why you use gimp and not Photoshop ? I prefer Photoshop - I have also gimp - but I don't like it so much .
I know I really get lost inside DA in faveing and commenting - only if I spent all this time of thanking for faves saying you welcome On actually creating more stuff - or just practicing and learning but what can I do I have DDa:)

Thank you for the lesson. Now that I see the proper way, it is obvious - but of course it's always obvious when someone shows you the correct answer.

I use GIMP instead of Photoshop for two reasons. First, Photoshop is expensive and I don't lots of much money. GIMP is free.

Second, as far as I know, Photoshop runs only on Windows and Mac computers. I use Linux, so even if I had Photoshop, it wouldn't run on my computers.

Take care and keep on making art.

This reminds me very powerfully of a Tarot card - Five of Cups in the Rider/Waite/Smith deck. That card shows a solitary figure facing away from us somewhat towards the left. He (she?) has three overturned cups that he's facing, focused on the emptiness and loss. Behind him nearby are two more cups, upright and still full - but he doesn't see them because he's so fixed on the loss and disappointment.

I love the way you've done this - you've certainly caught the bleakness and sorrow, the overwhelming sense of futility... nicely done.
