This Mixed Media Photo Manipulation Is Based on The Card 5 Cups In the Rider Tarot Deck .
That card shows a solitary figure facing away from us somewhat towards the left. He (she?) has three overturned cups that he's facing, focused on the emptiness and loss. Behind him nearby are two more cups, upright and still full - but he doesn't see them because he's so fixed on the loss and disappointment.
I have always seen this card as indicating a sense of *unnecessary* loss or desperation, allowing what's gone wrong to cause a person to miss those things that could still go right. To me it is a desperation that is not beyond the power of the person suffering it to overcome; not a victim of fate, but of his/her own unwillingness to look beyond the loss. Card shows that as a result of the doubt that permeated the previous card alone we are desperate, pessimistic, and see only the half empty glass of the situation. Our responses are proportionate and based on false assumptions that we tested.
Despair makes us enter into ourselves and we begin to develop depression and lack of interest. If we continue to behave this way, the environment will begin to respond accordingly and ultimately we may find ourselves facing a reality where we have reason to really be desperate.
It is important to remember and understand that our desperation is not justified. We must stop the destructive chain into which we found ourselves by a good and proper communication with the environment .
